Piecemeal Renovation. Cohesive Design.

Renovating an entire house at once can be overwhelming and expensive. For many homeowners, tackling one room at a time makes more sense. Maybe you start with the bathrooms, then the bedrooms, and eventually the kitchen. Or perhaps you renovate floor by floor.

The challenge? Renovating in pieces can sometimes lead to mismatched styles, poor flow, or a home that feels disjointed. The good news is that with careful planning and a strategic approach, you can renovate in stages while still creating a cohesive, stylish home. How do we do this with cohesion in mind?

Plan ahead. What are your end game goals? You might not be able to do every square foot at the same time but you can have a vision of how everything will eventually fall into place. For this, it’s important to understand and define your style. If you don’t know what your style is, take our quick style quiz to find out.

So, how can you make things cohesive in the meantime?

The rooms in waiting can get a fresh coat of paint, some throw pillows, accessories, or window treatments to invite the color palette and styling of the neighboring room that is getting its makeover. You will potentially still be able to use most of these smaller investments when you finally get to upgrade the said rooms. Something else that can be picked out is an area rug, even some art for the walls. Most people forget that the small things can create such cohesiveness in a room.

Renovating in stages doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style or cohesion. By planning ahead and understanding that things take time such as spatial planning, lighting, paint, furniture layout, etc. you can create a home that feels connected, even if each room is done on its own timeline.
