Designing your dream home means wanting it all. Beautiful fixtures, the perfect accent
chair, the coffee table that ties everything together, and of course, the art. But most of
us need to balance those desires with a realistic budget. So where should you save,
and where is it worth investing a little more? Let’s break down how to make smart,
strategic choices that elevate your space without overspending.
Where to Splurge:
Plumbing fixtures. They are the most expensive to install and repair. Anything that is
buried in a wall or floor and needs maintenance or replacing because it’s not well made
is a poor investment. Pennywise pound foolish.
Wallpaper. Wallpaper adds immeasurable warmth, incomparable design and protects
the integrity of the walls. Yes, it’s a huge commitment but when executed properly it will
be your most adored and admired feature in your home.
Design Services. Everyone thinks interior designers are expensive and they’re not
entirely wrong. However, Interior Designers offer vetted service providers and products,
guidance, supervision and let’s face it, interior designers are going to be less expensive
than ripping out the wrong tile and needing to do it again. They’re also therapy for the
stress these decisions can cause.
Where to Conserve:
Throw Pillows. I love a good custom throw pillow; actually, I really do. But if you’re at the
tail end of your budget and the well has run dry consider buying inexpensive throw
pillows from major retailers or even just pillow cases to cover some of the pillows your
sofa may have come with. But start squirreling some funds away for that upgrade!
Decorative accents. Vases, catch all trays, coasters, coffee table books, picture frames.
There are plenty of options out there that will get you the “look for less”. Sometimes a
family heirloom you already own can add a surprising element of charm, individuality,
and richness.
LED Medicine Cabinets. Unpopular opinion but I think these give off insufficient lighting
and once they’ve burnt out you need an electrician to install a new one. Not worth it.
Better to have a beautiful mirror or medicine cabinet so you can thank your reflection for
the sound investment. Another idea is, sconce lighting around your mirror or medicine cabinet. Sconces make such a big difference because it reduces glare and shadows. So, think if you’re doing your makeup and you want to make sure the color is right on your face the lighting is important for that task.
Bringing it all Together:
Designing a home you love doesn’t require an unlimited budget, but it does requires
clarity, intention, and smart decision-making. By knowing where to invest and where to
save, you can create a space that feels elevated, functional, and uniquely yours.
Thoughtful splurges bring long-term value and everyday joy, while strategic
conservations keep your project grounded and flexible.
At the end of the day, great design is about balance. Spend where it truly enhances
your life, save where it won’t diminish the impact, and trust that the mix of both will
create a home that feels effortlessly curated and beautifully you.
